Using Antioxidants for Great Skin

Of the 4 basic things to do for great skin, the second is to incorporate antioxidants into your daily regimen. What are antioxidants? Antioxidants are substances that inhibit oxidation or reactions promoted by oxygen. They protect the cells from damage by free radicals. What are free radicals? As the body uses oxygen, these by-products cause oxidative damage to the cells of the body. Free radicals come from smoking, pollution, poisons, fried foods, excessive alcohol consumption and as a by-product of normal metabolism. Utilizing antioxidants helps prevent, and repair, the damage free radicals cause. Here are several ways to add antioxidants into your daily regimen.

  1. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and legumes known to contain antioxidants and plenty of vitamin C and E and Selenium. Some great sources are berries, artichokes, red grapes and red wine, beans, carrots, apples, oranges, bell peppers, dark-leafy greens, potatoes, avocados, fish, nuts and dark chocolate to help your body protect itself from the rigors of oxidation.
  2. Use a topical product proven to be high in vitamins C and E. When doing so, make sure the product is a serum instead of a cream as serums penetrate the skin much more readily. Also make sure it is structured correctly, molecularly, otherwise the skin will not be able to absorb and utilize it.

We can’t totally avoid free radicals and oxidation, but we can fight against them with a good diet and proper skin care.
